Romantic couple portrait in Glenarm Castle gardens with tulips and magnolia in bloom

A Spring Estate Wedding at Glenarm Castle, Northern Ireland

A Romantic Spring Estate Wedding at Glenarm Castle, Northern Ireland

There is something incredibly special about a spring wedding at Glenarm Castle. Tucked along the Causeway Coast, this beautiful estate offers the perfect setting for luxury wedding photography in Northern Ireland, and this early April day felt calm, romantic, and quietly magical.

As we wandered the grounds, the first signs of spring were everywhere. Around the castle itself, daffodils bloomed in soft yellows, framing the grand architecture and bringing a gentle warmth to the scene. The stonework of the castle, paired with the symmetry of the gardens and sweeping lawns, creates that timeless country estate feel that so many couples dream of when planning a castle wedding in Ireland.

On their wedding day, the gardens of Glenarm Castle quietly awakened, as magnolias unfurled their delicate saucer blooms and tulips in maroon, lilac, and soft yellow rose bravely through the cool spring air.

how it felt

An Elegant Estate Wedding at Glenarm Castle

A Spring Wedding at Glenarm Castle, Northern Ireland

One of the most peaceful moments of the day was stepping out onto the lawn below the grand staircase. From here, you could see out across the fields where sheep and their lambs grazed quietly, adding to that soft, pastoral Irish atmosphere. It felt still and unhurried — the kind of setting that allows you to truly soak in your wedding day.

We then made our way into the walled gardens at Glenarm Castle, which are one of the highlights of the estate. Although they are usually open to the public, we timed it just right and were able to stay for an extra half hour after closing — giving us the rare experience of having the gardens entirely to ourselves. Spring was just beginning to unfold here in early April. Tulips in shades of purple, lilac, and soft lemon yellow were starting to push through the soil, hinting at the famous tulip festival that takes place each year. Even without full bloom, the colours were fresh, delicate, and perfectly suited to a romantic spring wedding.

A Spring Garden Estate Wedding

In the elegance of Glenarm’s walled garden, spring arrived in full expression — magnolia blossoms opening wide, and tulips in soft, romantic hues weaving colour through the still, cool air.

At the heart of the garden stood a magnificent magnolia tree, completely covered in large, saucer-shaped blossoms. It felt like the centrepiece of the entire garden — a natural canopy of soft pink and ivory petals. Beneath it, we captured some of the most intimate and romantic portraits of the day. It’s moments like this that remind couples that even in early spring, when trees are still bare, Glenarm Castle Walled Gardens offers incredible beauty and texture for your wedding photography.

The estate itself is rich in character, with towering trees, historic stonework, and glimpses of castle turrets woven throughout the village. The bare branches of the trees added a beautiful structure to the images, giving that slightly moody, cinematic feel that works so well for spring time castle weddings in Northern Ireland.

Of course, we also took a little time to step away from the manicured gardens. In a wilder, more unkept part of the grounds, surrounded by long grass and ancient trees, we created a fun and spontaneous “runaway bride” moment. The bride ran freely through the field, her veil flowing behind her, while the groom followed close behind. It felt playful, romantic, and almost like a scene from Wuthering Heights — full of movement, emotion, and storytelling.

35mm Film Wedding Photography at Glenarm Castle

Alongside digital coverage, I also offer 35mm film wedding photography in Northern Ireland as an addition to your gallery, and some of these images from this Glenarm Castle wedding were captured on film.

There’s something incredibly special about incorporating film into your wedding day. It brings a sense of nostalgia and timelessness that feels completely different from digital photography. Film has a softer, more organic quality — the tones, the grain, and the way it captures light all add to that romantic, story-driven feel.

Shooting on film is also a much more intentional process. Unlike digital, where I can take a burst of images and select the best one, film is a one-shot moment. It’s about waiting, watching, and capturing something real as it unfolds. Because of this, film photography often feels more candid, emotive, and authentic.

35mm film wedding photography is becoming increasingly popular in Northern Ireland, especially for couples who are drawn to a more editorial and nostalgic style. It works beautifully alongside digital imagery, adding depth and variation to your final gallery — from the softness of the magnolia blooms to the movement of a veil across the lawns of Glenarm Castle.

“I remember kicking off my heels and laughing, swapping them for my Crocs as if I’d suddenly decided to just be myself again. Then I ran through the long spring grass, past these incredible old trees that felt like they’d been standing there forever. My dress trailed behind me, my veil lifting in the wind, and I could hear him laughing as he ran after me. It felt completely free, almost cinematic — like we had stepped into our own little film, just the two of us in that moment, with the castle watching quietly in the background.“
