Flying to Ireland to Propose: A Guide to Planning Your Perfect Northern Ireland Engagement

Dunluce Lodge to Dunseverick Castle

The Ultimate Ireland Proposal Photography Experience

There is something incredibly magical about a surprise proposal, and this one will stay with me forever. This couple had flown the whole way from the United States to spend time along the Causeway Coast, with part of the trip planned around visiting her grandparents who still live here in Northern Ireland. What she didn’t know, though, was that her partner had been secretly planning the most perfect summer-evening proposal—one that would blend family, heritage, and a truly breathtaking landscape.

A Guide to Planning Your Perfect Northern Ireland Engagement

We started organising everything weeks in advance. A new hotel, Dunluce Lodge Hotel, had just opened along the Causeway Coast, offering adults a five-star dining experience with those rich, coastal views you dream of when visiting Ireland. It also happens to be perfectly located for a post-dinner stroll to some of the most scenic places the coast has to offer—ideal for a proposal.

He booked them a long, relaxed dinner so they wouldn’t feel rushed at all. They fully embraced the experience, going all out with three courses, and later told me it was “the best food ever.” Meanwhile, I waited nearby in my car—camera ready but hidden, pretending to read a book so she wouldn’t suspect a thing.

Their chosen location was Dunseverick Castle Ruins, a stunning and historically rich cliff-top spot with sweeping views of the ocean. She thought they were simply stretching their legs after dinner. She didn’t even notice me sitting tucked away in my car as they arrived. We had planned that he would guide her down toward the little mine pathway, and as soon as they reached the perfect viewpoint, he’d drop to one knee.

From up above, I captured the entire moment from a distance, framing them against the deep green grass, the rugged castle ruins, and the dramatic cliffs meeting the North Atlantic. It was everything you could want from an Ireland proposal—raw, real, emotional, and set within a landscape that feels entirely otherworldly. And of course… she said yes!

Once the surprise was revealed—and after a few happy tears—he told her he had also booked a photographer to capture their proposal. We then had a relaxed couple session, wandering around the ruins and soaking in the moody, overcast evening. They described themselves as a “gothic couple,” and I absolutely loved that they both arrived in head-to-toe black. The darker skies suited them perfectly, adding a touch of drama and depth to every frame.

But the surprises didn’t end there. After our shoot, we headed into the nearby town of Bushmills, where the couple learned how to pour their own Guinness pints—a fun and very Irish way to keep the celebrations going. Tucked around the corner in a small booth, her parents were waiting for them. Her face lit up instantly. They had organised everything so beautifully: a romantic dinner, a coastal proposal, photographs to mark the moment, and finally, a warm celebration with her family.

They kindly invited me to stay for a drink, so I ended the evening with a comforting cup of Irish breakfast tea (to warm up) while they shared pints and phoned friends back home. It was one of those evenings that felt meaningful from start to finish.

For proposals like this, I always work on a fast turnaround so couples can share their news quickly with loved ones. They received their photos the very next day—something especially important when you’ve flown across the world for such a once-in-a-lifetime moment. Capturing their story felt truly special, and it’s a perfect reminder of how magical planning your proposal in Ireland can be.
