Evening Beach Session at White Rocks, Portrush

There’s something truly magical about watching a family just be together, without posing or forcing a single moment. That’s what I loved about this session at White Rocks Beach in Portrush, Northern Ireland.

The evening was soft and quiet — we had the beach almost entirely to ourselves. The light was gentle and warm, perfect for a relaxed family photography session. The older kids couldn’t wait to kick off their shoes and run straight into the sea. They laughed as they splashed through the waves, mesmerised by the freedom of having the whole coast to explore. Meanwhile, their beautiful baby sister watched it all from the safety of her mama’s arms, wearing the sweetest little bonnet embroidered with tiny flowers, such a small detail, but one I know will mean the world to look back on years from now. It’s these little moments I always aim to preserve in my work as a Northern Ireland family photographer.

As the evening went on, Mum and Dad just played with their children. They chased them down the sand, threw them into the air to peals of laughter, wrapped them in warm hugs, and clapped along as their daughter gave us all an impromptu Irish dance performance. It was exactly what I love about documentary family photography; simply capturing what’s real.

No stiff posing. No telling the kids to “stand still and smile.” Just the authentic connection that lives in the unplanned details: the sandy feet, the salty hair blowing in the wind, the way Mum’s eyes light up when she looks at her little ones. I guide you gently through the whole session.

White Rocks Beach gave us a stunning backdrop; wide, open sands, rolling waves, and the dramatic cliffs of the Northern Ireland coast. The scope was perfect for this kind of relaxed, artistic family photography that lets children roam and be themselves.
