Couples Photography at Kinbane Castle with 35mm Film
On St. Patrick’s Day in March, I met this lovely couple for a relaxed couples photography session at Kinbane Castle, one of the most breathtaking and quietly romantic locations on the Causeway Coast in Northern Ireland – even in the winter months. If you’ve never visited before, Kinbane Castle (sometimes called Kinbane Head) is a National Trust site, that’s free to access, and it remains something of a hidden gem along this famous stretch of coastline.

Sea Cliffs, Castle Ruins & Romance
A Couples Shoot at Kinbane Castle
Discovering Kinbane Castle on the Causeway Coast
From the small parking area at the top, the adventure begins. Kinbane isn’t a location you simply stroll into. To reach the ruins, you follow a winding path and descend around 140 stone steps carved into the cliffs. It’s a bit of a walk, but that’s part of the magic of the place. As you make your way down, the landscape slowly reveals itself — and with every turn, the views become more dramatic.
The first glimpse of the little rocky headland where the castle once stood is always special. Kinbane Castle was built in the 1500s by the MacDonnell clan, and although only fragments of the old stone structure remain today, the ruins still carry so much history and atmosphere. You can see the old stone walls, remnants of the entrance gates, and weathered rock that has been shaped by centuries of wind and sea.
A Hidden Gem for Couples Photography in Northern Ireland
But what makes Kinbane truly remarkable isn’t just the ruins themselves — it’s the landscape surrounding them. The cliffs stretch out into the sea in such a unique way, creating this small, dramatic peninsula surrounded by water on three sides. When you stand down there, you feel tucked away from the rest of the world. The green grass contrasts beautifully against the rugged stone and deep blue ocean, and on a clear day you can even see Rathlin Island across the water.
Even on St. Patrick’s Day, when there were a few other visitors exploring the site, it still felt peaceful and private. Kinbane is such a large open area that you never feel crowded. It’s one of those rare places where you can still enjoy an intimate photo session without feeling like anyone is watching you.
That sense of space and quiet makes it a wonderful spot for couples photography on the Causeway Coast.
Exploring the Landscape During a Kinbane Castle Photoshoot
As we wandered around the site, we explored different areas — the ruins themselves, the grassy cliff edges, and the views looking out over the sea. There’s also a small waterfall that runs down the cliffside, which can become quite dramatic after rainfall. On this particular day it added such a lovely natural element to the scenery.
One of the things I love most about photographing couples at Kinbane Castle is how varied the location is. Within just a short walk you have ancient stonework, rolling green grass, towering cliffs, ocean views, and open skies. It gives us so many different backdrops without needing to move to another location.
Relaxed and Natural Couples Photography
During my sessions, I always aim to keep things relaxed and natural. Most couples tell me they feel a little nervous at the start — which is completely normal — so I guide you gently through the experience rather than leaving you standing there wondering what to do.
I’ll give you little prompts and movements to help everything feel natural. Sometimes that might mean walking together along the path, holding hands and chatting as you go. Other times I might ask you to run ahead playfully, chase each other, or pull each other in for a hug. I might suggest whispering something into each other’s ear or simply standing close together and enjoying the view.
These small actions help couples relax and forget about the camera, allowing real moments to unfold naturally. My goal is always to create images that feel genuine — photographs that capture the connection between you rather than stiff poses.

A Timeless 35mm Add-On
35mm Analogue Film Photography Add-On
A Love Story on Film: Timeless 35mm Moments, Softly Told
There’s something incredibly special about slowing things down and capturing a moment just once—no re-takes, no overthinking, just pure, honest storytelling. That’s exactly what I love about offering 35mm film as an add-on to your session. As an analogue film photographer in Northern Ireland, this is my little way of bringing a touch of nostalgia and artistry into your wedding or shoot.
You can choose to add one or two rolls of 35mm film to your package. Throughout the day, I’ll weave these frames in naturally alongside your digital gallery—quietly documenting those fleeting, in-between moments with intention and care. Every click of the shutter matters. Film encourages us to be present, to trust the moment, and to capture it exactly as it unfolds.
Unlike digital, there’s no instant preview. Your film is carefully sent away to be developed, embracing a process that’s beautifully slow and considered. And honestly—that’s part of the magic. A few weeks after your wedding or session, you’ll receive your film images as a surprise little parcel, something tangible and completely unique to you.
The aesthetic of 35mm film is unmistakable. Soft grain, rich tones, and an organic feel that simply can’t be replicated. It’s imperfect in the most perfect way—romantic, nostalgic, and full of soul. These images often feel like memories you’ve held onto for years, even though they’ve just been created.
This add-on is perfect for couples who love that artistic edge, who appreciate the beauty of imperfection, and who want something a little different woven into their story. It’s fun, it’s meaningful, and it adds another layer to your gallery that feels deeply personal.
If you’re drawn to that timeless, editorial feel and love the idea of reliving your day through a slightly different lens, then 35mm film might just be the perfect addition.
Why Kinbane Castle Is Perfect for Couple and Engagement Photos
We ended up spending almost two hours at Kinbane Castle, and it honestly felt like the time flew by. That’s the beauty of this location — there’s so much to explore that you can keep discovering new angles and views as the light shifts throughout the session.
Kinbane is also an incredible place for sunrise or sunset photography. Because of its position along the coastline, you can experience beautiful light on both sides of the headland depending on the time of day. As the sun begins to dip lower, the cliffs and ocean take on this beautiful golden glow that feels incredibly romantic.
It’s easy to see why Kinbane Castle has become one of my favourite locations for couples photography on the Causeway Coast. Between the history, the dramatic scenery, and the peaceful atmosphere, it creates such a special setting for photographs.
It’s also a fantastic location for engagement sessions and even surprise proposals, thanks to its secluded feel and breathtaking views.
